To truly appreciate how Belson has remained a fixture in the Philippine corporate scene, one must first understand how the company is rooted on values which pre-date its founding 47 years ago.
The name “Belson” is a play on the words “Benito E. Lim and Son”—the son referred to is Eduardo, or Eddie Lim. The young Eddie was fond of two things: basketball and business. His love for both the sport and business helped in shaping the ideals upon which he built Belson later in life.
While it was just a hobby at first, Eddie’s basketball-playing began to grow into a lifelong passion when he became captain ball on his second year in high school. He built his bones as a guard for the San Beda Red Warriors and was dubbed “Stonewall” by the acclaimed sportscaster, Willie Hernandez. With him as guard, the San Beda squad went on to claim back-to-back championships in the 1951 and 1952 seasons of the NCAA. Also in 1952, they placed 1st in the National Open Tournament. After collegiate basketball, Eddie played a key role in building YCO’s record of seven straight championships at the Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association. Outside our shores, Eddie represented the Philippines in the Asian Games in 1954 and 1958, proceeding to win gold on both occasions. During this streak, the hard-nosed guard became a two-time Olympian and was even part of the 1959 Philippine team in the FIBA World Championship which placed 9th in a competition which scaled the globe.
But this love for basketball seeped into other aspects of his life. As he began to discover the joys of playing ball, he also saw how hard work and practice paid off. At the young age of 13, he took traders on kalesa rides around Chinatown and sometimes even offered to transport goods over the port area to the market. With the small capital he earned, he bought piglets which he would fatten and sell later. For him, doing business was no different from playing a sport. After graduating from San Beda’s Commercial Science course—and with his experiences behind him—Eddie co-founded CLPBGN & Co. with some of the country’s leading professionals.
Realizing his destiny, Eddie later renamed his brokerage company from CLPBGN & Co. (an acronym for its founders) in 1985 to simply be that of his father’s name and his. It is homage to the strong foundations which he had acquired from his bond with his father, one that he now shares with others through his company. The values he learned from basketball and business—fair play and hard work—he brought with him as he built his own company. And not stopping there, the ex-basketball superstar dared to dream of a world-class unified bourse to share with all. The result today is the Philippine Stock Exchange.
He was proclaimed Chairman Emeritus of the PSE in 1995 and is remembered by the local basketball community as one of its brightest stars. Leaving a proud heritage, Eduardo Lim passed away in 2002.
